A Pilot Survey of Hearing Loss in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Abstract
Of 33 patients with definite and classical rheumatoid arthritis, 12 were found to have subnormal hearing, a prevalence higher than that in the general papulation. The majority of patients developed hearing loss after the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. There was no evidence to suggest hearing impairment due to rheumatoid involvement of the ossicular joints. Seven patients had an unexplained sensorineural type of deafness. It is suggested that salicylate therapy be discontinued before any hearing tests are carried out.
