Abstract
The oscillations observed in the excitation functions for the fusion of four light heavy ion systems have been analyzed with the spectral density method to extract the values of the coherence width. The hypothesis is made that these structures are due to the excitation of overlapping states of a dinuclear intermediate system. The deduced values of the widths are found to be in agreement with the predictions of the orbiting-cluster model. Keywords
