Mn/sup 2+/ as a potential solid-state laser ion

Abstract
The Mn-doped spinel MgAl/sub 2/O/sub 4/ has been spectroscopically investigated in view of the potential use as a short-wavelength solid-state laser. The very small absorption and emission cross sections imply a high Mn concentration, but the measured excited state absorption (ESA) at the emission wavelength will prevent laser action of this material.
