Abstract
The classical relativistic string is coupled to a massless scalar field via an interaction involving the whole volume bounded by its world history–a drum. The source of the field, however, as well as variations of the action with respect to drum histories, are localized on the string. In a local approximation, the string tension originates entirely in the massless field. Keywords
