Abstract
The molecular fluorescence of CdHg has been studied following excitation of Hg2 at 266 nm. The fluorescence is modeled by giving the CdHg (a) state a lifetime of 2.4 μsec and including a reservoir of metastable Cd2Hg molecules. The transmission of this system has been monitored at wavelengths between 390 and 514 nm as a function of cadmium density and temperature yielding results consistent with the Cd2Hg hypothesis. Excited state absorption has been measured for CdHg (a), Cd2Hg, pure Hg, and pure Cd. The absorption intrinsic to CdHg (a) has a peak cross section of 5×10−19 cm2 at 450 nm and a width of 90 nm at half-maximum.Keywords
