Abstract
The general problem of electromagnetic wave propagation through nonlinear media is discussed. The Lagrangian and Hamiltonian densities are derived from the Maxwell equations, by using unconventional definitions for the scalar and vector potentials. The general form of the momentum-energy tensor is derived and explicit expressions for its elements are given. The relation between this tensor and the space-time description of propagation is analysed. Keywords
