Abstract
Photoemission experiments with near the O threshold exhibit a resonant enhancement of Cu feature in the valence-band region of Y ( K). This first-ever observation of an interatomic resonance provides direct experimental indication of considerable hybridization between Cu and O states. Comparing the photoemission results with the x-ray absorption spectra (XAS) at O edge, we show that the 528-eV peak in the XAS of these compounds cannot be attributed to stoichiometry induced holes at , contrary to previous interpretation. We discuss various implications of our observations.
