Abstract
The two articles that follow are concerned with the roles scientists play in government policymaking. Here, Ralph Sanders suggests that the counsel of scientists in Washington has in the past competed with the counsel of others on a privileged basis, but no longer does so. The second article is a report on a study of forty scientists who have served as advisors or consultants to government, and in particular, how they themselves view their roles—and effectiveness. Ralph Sanders is associate professor of political science at the Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.
