Abstract
The nature of the terms that can be added to the usual Lagrangian for sigma models is investigated. Some of the new expressions correspond to Skyrme‐like terms while others are more topological in character. It is pointed out that for the CP1 case there is only one Skyrme‐like term, while for CPN, N>1, more possibilities arise which all become the same if N=1. This suggests the existence of more general Skyrme‐like models for N>1.Keywords
