Abstract
This article explores three dimensions of change facing the welfare state in the UK. In the first instance it discusses the economic context and the changing resource base of the British welfare system. Secondly, it explores the emergent constituency for welfare services that arises as a consequence of demographic change and social polarisation. Finally it looks at the culture of governance as a result of the Europeanisation of policy making. The authors conclude that the future of the UK welfare state in Europe will be determined by a number of critical moments marked by the attempt to resolve the contradictions between the core features of contrasting welfare regimes. Keywords
