Abstract
What is required for successful management? Are people born with management ability or can the skills be learnt? Are there particular characteristics which are more commonly found in successful managers? This paper looks at what managers actually do and at management theory related to these questions. It gives some suggestions as to how management performance can be improved. It provides a framework within which occupational therapists can question their own methods and style of management, an exercise which can only be carried out individually in relation to personal approach, the environment and tasks to be achieved.
