Abstract
The collision-induced translational-rotational far-infrared absorption of nitrogen has been measured for the spectral range 30 to 400 cm-1 for pressures up to 7 kbar, or densities up to 800 amagat. These results are discussed in terms of absorption processes arising from binary, ternary and quaternary collisions and the data are used to determine an estimate for the absolute value of the quadrupole moment of a nitrogen molecule of mod Q mod =(1.21+or-0.09)*10-26 esu. Keywords
