Isozyme characterization of cattle (Bos taurus) and American buffalo (Bison bison) cell cultures

Abstract
Towards identifying cell contamination in cultures 4 Bovidae cell lines [BEK-1 (bovine embryonic kidney), MDBK (Madin-Darby bovine kidney), Bu (buffalo lung fibroblast) and EBTr (bovine trachea cell)] were characterized enzymatic biochemical markers. Of 15 enzymatic systems, 3 (adenosine deaminase (Ada), phosphoglucomutase (Pgm) and nucleoside phosphorylase (Np)) were polymorphic and suitable for biochemical identification of each cell line. The Bu cell line has a Np phenotypic pattern which could be distinctive of the B. bison species.
