Abstract
A water-soluble, dark purple pigment was isolated from the zooecium of the bryozoan Bugula neritina. The pigment was precipitated at pH 11 or above and pH 2 or below. It showed a color change from blue-purple at pH 2.4 to red at pH 8, and back to blue-purple at pH 11. The absorption curve showed a sharp maximum at 545 millimicrons. A close resemblance was indicated between this pigment and the adenochrome of Fox and Updegraff obtained from the bronchial hearts of the Octopus.
