Nurses' Experiences with Dangerous Behavior: Implications for Training

Abstract
A hospital survey of 67 psychiatric nurses indicated that the nurses encountered a variety of forms of both staff and patient behavior that can be interpreted as dangerous. Moreover, most of the nurses considered possible training in the prevention and management of violence to be at least somewhat helpful in their work. Several implications of the results are also explored including the need for training programs to focus on the experiences and attitudes about violence of the participants, the value of a multimedia approach to training, and the need for an interdisciplinary component to training programs.
