Abstract
Mass screening was done by measurements of intraocular tension with Schiotz''s standardized tonometer. The project covered 15,695 employees, upward of 30 years of age, from industrial establishments in L6dz. Intraocular pressure in healthy subjects was for women 15.3-15.9 mm Hg, and for men 15.0 to 15.2 mm Hg. Persons in whom the pressure was higher than 22.4 mm Hg were examined clinically and kept under extended observation. Glaucoma was diagnosed in 149, of whom only 8 had had previous treatment or 0.95% of the total examined. Another 47 were suspected to have the disease. Incidence was highest in the age group of 51 to 60 years, higher among men than women (1.12 v. 0.83 percent), and among mental workers twice that among the physical. Keywords
