Abstract
Similar volumes of altered and adjacent normal enamel were ground from teeth from a low fluoride area. Altered enamel, as exemplified by white spots, brown spots, and stained enamel, was significantly and consistently less soluble (10-22%) in pH 4.44 potassium acetate buffer than adjacent normal enamel ground to an equal depth. However, there did not seem to be any relationship between the extent of dissolution and the degree of discoloration as measured by relative optical densities. Keywords
