Abstract
An effective two-nucleon central potential inside nuclear matter is proposed on the basis of Barker's recent analysis of doublet splittings for . This potential has less singlet even and more singlet odd attraction than for free nucleons. It is inferred that nonlocal potentials are unavoidable for shell model calculations.
