Surgical Correction of Acquired Vocal Cord Webs

Abstract
IN RECENT years interest in the treatment of laryngeal injuries has increased. Attention has been focused primarily on the management of acute injuries and on the treatment of laryngeal stenosis. Until recently, few reports have appeared describing the treatment of acquired webs limited to the area of the vacal cords and anterior commissure. Achievement of epithelization of the anterior commissure after excision of a web, thus preventing adhesions from forming between the denuded vocal cords, is the principle underlying the surgical treatment of anterior glottic webs. More than 40 years ago, Haslinger1 reported the successful correction of an anterior glottic web. Under direct laryngoscopic control, he incised the web and inserted a silver plate between the vocal cords into the area of the anterior commissure. The plate was kept in place by wire sutures that had been passed into the laryngeal lumen percutaneously and were fixed to the overlying skin.
