Abstract
The absorption spectrum of biphenylene in the vapour phase in the range 3900–3100 Å is presented at high resolution, and in solution at medium and low dispersion. Solvent effects, the vibronic sequence structure, and the band contours, as well as correlation with crystal polarization data allow the assignment of the absorption to two transitions, both of which are long-molecular axis polarized.
