Abstract
The losses associated with the pressure‐antisymmetric modes of centrally vented cylindrical cavities are of special interest because of their relevance to acoustic instability of rocket motors. Because the pressure amplitude of such an unperturbed mode is highly nonuniform over the orifice, the usual lumped circuit calculation is invalid. If it is used in spite of this, one finds no radiation out of the orifice. We have carried out a variational analysis to obtain a quantitative estimate of the loss which should actually occur. Keywords
