Salmonellosis in Turkeys and Chickens Associated with Contaminated Feed

Abstract
Two cases of Salmonella infections in young turkey poults, and one case in chicks are described. S. thomasville, S. new brunswick, and S. kentucky were isolated from the livers and intestines of poults from the first case, and S. thomasville from an unopened bag of feed from the same batch that had been fed to these poults. S. taksony, S. bredeny, S. Oregon, and S. worthington were isolated from the livers and/or intestines of the poults in the second case. S. taksony and S. montevideo were isolated from samples from unopened bags of feed from the same batch that had been fed to these poults. S. infantis, S. anatum, and S. derby were isolated from the ceca of chicks in the third case. S. infantis, S. California, and S. schwarzengrund were isolated from unopened bags of feed from the same batch that had been fed to the chicks. S. anatum was isolated from an unopened bag of meat scraps used at the local mill where this feed was mixed. In 2 other cases investigated, the species of Salmonella isolated from the birds were not identical with the species recovered from the feed. S. binza and S. montevideo were isolated from poults, and S. thompson from unopened bags of feed. In still another case, S. anatum, S. cubana, and S. saintpaul were isolated from poults, and S. tennessee from the feed.
