Abstract
An expression is derived for the vapor pressure of a liquid assuming the validity of van der Waals' equation of state. The theory involves the use of an appropriate mathematical expression for the volume of a van der Waals liquid and does not require recourse to any empirical relationships. The vapor pressure equation so obtained can be put into a reduced form, which is of a universal nature. The laws of Guldberg-Guye and of Trouton are shown to be compatible with the theory with constants of the correct order of magnitude.
