Abstract
A UPS study is made of the lineshapes of the impurity densities of states in the dilute alloys AuNi, CuNi, ZnNi and AuCo (impurity concentration <or=5.0 at.%). It is shown that in AuNi and CuNi narrow impurity states exist which have a non-Lorentzian lineshape. In ZnNi a Lorentzian-like broad lineshape is found. For the narrow impurity states, the crystal-field and spin-orbit splittings are shown to give an important contribution to the width. In AuCo no structure due to the impurity state is observed. For this alloy the intensity in the sp-band region is enhanced. It is argued that strong correlation interactions are responsible for this effect. Keywords
