Abstract
The dose response curves of acid output stimulated by pentagastrin, natural caerulein and 3 synthetic caerulein-like peptides were obtained in 10 conscious cats with gastric fistulas. Although these peptides slightly differed in potency, they all exhibited almost identical efficacy. Caerulein added to pentagastrin infusion caused an increase in acid output in response to lower doses of pentagastrin, whereas the maximal response to pentagastrin was decreased due to the reflux of the duodenal content. Caerulein added to pentagastrin did not change the maximal response of Pavlov pouch. Natural caerulein and related peptides containing the C-terminal heptadecapeptide of cholecystokinin prevented the production of duodenal ulcerations by pentagastrin probably due to the increase in the neutralization of gastric juice in the duodenum. Keywords
