Abstract
It is shown that the interpretation of the charging of a polymer surface given by Chowdry and Westgate (1974) is probably incorrect. For linear charging, the trap distribution that they invoke is not found experimentally, while for nonlinear charging, their proposed electron affinity appears to be too large. The mechanism of contact charging remains unclear. Keywords
