Abstract
The characteristics of wear particles generated during rolling-contact fatigue of ball and tapered-roller bearing were investigated. The ball bearing were made of through-hardening grade AISI 52100 steel, whereas the tapered roller bearing were made from carburizing grade AISI 4118 steel. Changes in the morphology and quantity of particles generated during the life of the bearings were evaluated. The differences in the kinematics, surface finish, lubrication condition, and the materials of the two bearing types were found to affect particle characteristics. The importance of lubricant cleanliness to bearing life is highlighted. Keywords
