Abstract
In response to being presented with volume two of The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, the Duke of Gloucester said: "Another damned, thick, square book! Always scribble, scribble, scribble! Eh, Mr. Gibbon?" Much as we might decry the good duke's manners, we're likely to share his feelings, given the inexorable thickening of standard medical textbooks. The fourth edition of Bockus, for example, now fills seven volumes, totaling 4730 pages — a massive effort involving 345 authors and five editors.The obvious question is whether the final product is worth all the "scribble, scribble, scribble."
