Abstract
A year's experience with a 6‐week course devoted to teaching the basic clinical skills of the clinical interview, the physical examination and problem solving is described. The objectives of the course have been defined in behavioural terms and the teaching activities and assessments have been related to these objectives. The course has been based on a preceptor system supplemented by audiovisual aids and whole group activities. Student response as assessed by questionnaire has been favourable and has also allowed continuous modification of the course.
