Abstract
Extract Most reports of systemic mycosis in cats describe local or generalized infection by the yeast Cryptococcus neoformans. Eight reports were reviewed by Cordes and Royal (1967) Cordes, D. O. and Royal, W. A. 1967. Cryptococcosis in a cat. N.Z. vet. J., 15: 117–121. [Taylor & Francis Online] [Google Scholar] , and at least another three have been published since then (Okoski and Hasegawa, 1968 Okoshi, S. and Hasegawa, A . 1968. Cryptococcosis in a cat. Jap. J. vet. Sci., 30: 39–42. [Google Scholar] ; Campbell et al., 1970 Campbell, C. K. , Naylor, D. C. , Kelly, N. C. and Esplen, W. B. 1970. Cryptococcosis in a cat. Vet. Rec., 87: 406–409. [Google Scholar] ; Clark and Roubin, 1970 Clark, L. and Roubin, G. 1970. Cryptococcosis in a cat. Aust. vet. J., 46: 544–548. [Google Scholar] ). Two other yeasts, Histoplasma capsulatum and Blastomyces dermatiditis, have been reported as causing pneumonia in cats (Akun, 1950 Akun, R. S. 1950. Histoplasmosis in a cat. J. Am. vet. med. Ass., 117: 43–44. [Google Scholar] ; Sheldon, 1966 Sheldon, W. G. 1966. Pulmonany blastomycosis in a cat. Lab. Anim. Care., 16: 280–285. [Google Scholar] ). All of these yeasts are recognized pathogens, often primary, in man and animals. Keywords
