Abstract
Seeds of H. perforatum germinate much more rapidly in distilled than in tap water. Ca alone of the various ions present in tap water produces a similar retardation when added to distilled water. High alkalinity of the tap water is not a factor for the seeds germinate well in equally alkaline buffer solutions, provided no Ca is present. The data suggest that the seed coat permeability may be altered in the presence of Ca.
