Congenital Absence of the Gallbladder in the Adult

Abstract
Agenesis of the gallbladder not associated with other anomalies of the extrahepatic biliary tree is a rare condition, particularly in the adult. How frequently encountered this surgically interesting condition may be is difficult to ascertain from the literature because of the confusion as to the incidence of cases without symptoms compared with that of cases reported because of symptoms possibly resulting from the anomaly. There is far from uniform agreement as to its occurrence if it is considered irrespective of symptoms. Cole2 stated that "complete absence is extremely rare," and Bower1 considered this to be the fourth most unusual anomaly of the hepatobiliary system. Finney and Owen5 reported 2 cases explored within a short period of time in different hospitals in the same city; they felt that this coincidence was proof that the abnormality was not too unusual.
