Abstract
In the sera of normal rhesus and cynomolgus monkeys, complement-fixing antibodies, unaccompanied by neutralizing antibodies, have been found in high titer (up to 1:128) to at least 11 immunologically distinct Coxsackie (C) virus types. Such antibodies to 4 additional C virus types were consistently absent. When present, their behavior with respect to heat stability did not differ from that of Coxsackie virus complement-fixing antibodies produced in monkeys by specific hyperimmunization. In the latter, specific neutralizing antibodies also appear. The question of the relationship of Coxsackie virus disease and the "natural" complement-fixing antibodies remains open. Keywords
