Abstract
This is an attempt to clarify the structure of spontaneous symmetry breaking. It is shown that there are two types of situation. In one, called here SBS1, a symmetric ground state is degenerate with an asymmetric one; in the other, SBS2, the ground state belongs to a representation other than the identical one. Some cases which look like spontaneous symmetry breaking are in fact symmetry-breaking approximations. Keywords
