Abstract
This paper presents a preliminary assessment of the geographic extent and estimates of the incidence and the population at risk of dracunculiasis in Africa. Nineteen countries are known to be affected, in a belt extending right across the northern part of the continent south of 18°N, and in east Africa extending almost to the equator. Annual incidence is estimated to be 3.32 million, and the at-risk population is approximately 120 million. These data provide an initial baseline on which the success of control measures now being initiated in Africa can be assessed. Keywords
