EFFECT OF OXYGEN TENSION OF INSPIRED AIR ON THE RESPIRATORY RESPONSE OF NORMAL SUBJECTS TO CARBON DIOXIDE

Abstract
The respiratory response of 31 adult [male][male] to CO2 was studied. Each subject rested for 30 mins. in order to stabilize the respiratory vols. and then breathed (through a Siebe-Gorman half-mask) a mixture of 1% CO2 and 21% O2 for a period of 8-15 mins., after which time the respiratory vol. was again stable but at a higher level. Respiratory vol. was measured by continuous collection of the expired air in Tissot spirometers. This expt. was repeated with 1% CO2 and 99% O2. In all the expts. the avg. increment in the respiratory vol. was greater when the subject breathed 1% CO2 in 99% Oa than when he breathed 1% CO2 in 21% O2. Similar results were obtained when 2 and 4% CO2 were mixed with O2. In some subjects the difference in respiratory response was great enough to be of clinical importance and should be considered when CO2 is administered for therapeutic purposes.This publication has 4 references indexed in Scilit:
