Abstract
Presents a theory of the Brillouin scattering of light from both bulk and surface acoustic phonons in two semi-infinite media in contact. The theory incorporates both elasto-optic and surface-ripple mechanisms into the cross section. The appropriate Green functions are also derived for the displacement gradients associated with the acoustic vibrations of the elastically isotropic media. Some representative computed lineshapes which include contributions from the surface Stoneley waves and from the higher-frequency bulk acoustic waves, are presented and their features discussed.
