Quaternary Sedimentation in The Netherlands

Abstract
The Netherlands, as part of the North Sea Basin that subsided in Tertiary and Quaternary times, shows a complete sequence of sediments. The Dutch part of the basin contains as its eastern side fluvial deposits supplied from the south (Meuse), the southeast (Rhine), and the east (central German rivers). The Early Pleistocene shows shallow marine deposits several hundred meters thick covering the western and northwestern part of the country. In the Middle and Late Pleistocene the delta was extended and the development finished when the Saalian inland ice covered half of the country. Interglacial stages are characterized by local marine ingressions.
