Abstract
Different kinds of Balinese marriage make allowances for preferences according to individual personalities, for practical alliance strategies, and for religiously auspicious patrilateral parallel cousin unions as well. The related values are integrated in a hierarchical conception of personality, society, and cosmos which is expressed in positive categorical marriage rules, in symbols from legend and myth, and in actual cases of psychological stress. The simultaneous prevalence of individual love ideals, groups ranked by hypergamy, and ancestral temple endogamy in Bali clarifies issues in cross‐cultural marriage typology.
