Abstract
While the government has hailed supervision registers as a solution to problems involving mentally ill people in the community, the initiative could spark a whole new set of troubles, warns Tony Ryan Community care is fast becoming the principal service for people with severe mental illnesses. This has highlighted problems which were previously tackled away from the public gaze. In the asylums, the management of danger had been accommodated in the daily routine, but recently, mentally ill people have been involved in a spate of headline-grabbing incidents. A new series of measures has been designed in an attempt to reduce the possibility’ of further tragedies. This has made supervision through the assessment and management of risk the biggest issue related to this client group in the community (1).
