Abstract
For the sustained growth of mouse fibroblast cells (strain L) in suspended culture in Eagle''s medium, the periodic addition of arginine was found to be essential. This requirement could be met by arginine alone or by equimolar amounts of citrulline and aspartic acid. The L cells contain enzymes which catalyze the breakdown of arginine to ornithine and 2 equivalents of ammonia. The continuous and rapid breakdown of arginine observed during the growth of these cells explains the need for the periodic addition of arginine or its precursors. Keywords
