Abstract
The efficiency of structural optimization programs can be significantly improved by adopting some of the ideas developed in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The main purpose of the application of artificial intelligence notions is to shorten the total calculation time, which is the main obstacle against the wider application of optimization techniques in structural design. The basic idea presented in the paper is to develop computer programs which are able to take advantage of previous results in order to improve their operation and shorten calculations. Previous design results can provide numerical information concerning initial values of decision variables as well as non-numerical knowledge concerning the significance of constraints and possibilities of eliminating superfluous constraints in calculations. The numerical results of this application of artificial intelligence in structural design seem very promising although some problems must still be analysed. Keywords
