Abstract
Classifications by Bentham and Hooker, by K. Schumann, and by Edlin, are discussed. Certain modifications of the previous classifications are proposed. A key to the genera represented in N. and S. America is preceded by a consideration of the principal characters used in the key. The 56 American genera recognized by the writer, in the order in which they appear in the key, are then summarized, the date of publication of the genus, salient characteristics, approx. number of American spp., geographical distr. and divergent views of other authors being given in more less detail. So far as possible, the characterizations and conclusions were based upon examination of specimens in several of the larger herbaria of the U. S., but in a few instances published descrs. were the only available source of information. Bibliography of 97 titles. This publication has 5 references indexed in Scilit:
