Abstract
The Y-chromosome in D. busckii consists of a short, euchromatic, left arm and a long, heterochromatic, right arm. A reciprocal translocation induced by X-rays transferred the heterochromatic arm of the Y-chromosome to the proximal part of II R and produced a curled wing phenotype which was Y-linked. In salivary gland prepns. the translocated heterochromatic element of the Y-chromosome was distinguishable from euchromatic elements by its greater transparency, with pale bands which were frequently dotted. Its length was 0.6 to 0.75 the length of the X chromosome, which would indicate that the length of the entire Y chromosome is proportional in salivaries and at ganglial metaphases. Comparisons are made with D. melanogaster and other spp. concerning the genetic nature of the Y-chromosome.
