Reversible Infertility in Male Swine Fed α-Chlorohydrin

Abstract
Six mature boars were fed 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (α-chlorohydrin) at 1, 5, 25 or 50 mg/kg body weight daily for 25 days. The effect on fertility was assessed by comparing treatment conceptions (0 of 32 gilts conceiving) with pretreatment conceptions (34 of 45 gilts conceiving). The compound was effective by day 7 of treatment on this trial and by day 2 of treatment in a subsequent study. Post-treatment fertility was determined (21 of 47 gilts conceiving) beginning at day 3. The first post-treatment conception occurred on day 6. Gel and liquid semen volume, libido, coitus and ejaculation were not affected by treatment. Spermatozoa collected per ejaculate and motility were depressed during treatment and returned to pretreatment levels after treatment. Sperm abnormalities were increased on the two higher levels and not affected on the lower levels. Cytoplasmic droplets were the predominant abnormality. The addition of α-chlorohydrin to semen in vitro affected sperm motility similar to that observed with feeding of α-chlorohydrin. Ten matings conducted with the treated semen resulted in no conceptions.
