Abstract
The reliability of ABS figures for deaths from alcoholic liver disease was tested by investigating all deaths from chronic liver disease in the A.C.T. in the years 1979 to 1983. Significant under reporting of the role of alcohol was discovered. However, any simple function of the number of deaths from chronic liver disease and cirrhosis is also unreliable. Allowance must be made for changes in age structure of the population. A formula to estimate deaths from alcoholic liver disease is proposed.
