THE RATE OF GLUCOSE ABSORPTION FROM THE INTESTINE OF THE RAT

Abstract
The rate of absorption of glucose from the intestine of the rat under the conditions of forced feeding with strong glucose solns. which are generally used depends upon the amt. and conc. of the sugar. When the dose of glucose and the conc. are kept constant the absorption coefficient (mgs. absorbed per 100 square cms. body surface per hr.) decreases with time after adm. Variable doses administered in a fixed vol. gave relatively constant absorption coefficients (102-118) over a single absorption period. When variable doses of glucose were administered at the same conc. but in variable vol. the absorption coefficient was related to the dose of glucose. Under normal or at least voluntary feeding conditions absorption rates several times higher than those previously reported were found. By concentrating the period of eating through a prior period of fasting and offering a diet composed largely of glucose, absorption coefficients of 300 mg. were obtained. By giving glucose alone to eat and increasing the appetite with protamine zinc insulin injs. as much as 200 to 300 mg. of glucose per 100 sq. cm. body surface were absorbed each hr. A very cold environment increased the appetite so much that 50% glucose was taken in quantities large enough to give absorption coefficients of over 500.
