THE PRESSOR REACTION PRODUCED BY INHALATION OF CARBON DIOXIDE; STUDIES OF PATIENTS WITH NORMAL BLOOD PRESSURE AND WITH HYPERTENSION

Abstract
24 patients with normal blood pressures and 41 patients with varying degrees of hypertension were studied; these were divided into 2 groups (each containing normal and hypertensive individuals). A preliminary cold pressor test was given both groups followed by inhalation of 10% CO2 in O2. The cold test was repeated during inhalation of CO3 in group 1, and 5 mins. after removal of CO2 in group 2. Group 1 showed increased systolic and diastolic pressures during inhalation of CO2 and a greater response following application of cold during inhalation; group 2 showed similar response to that produced by cold before inhalation of CO2. No qualitative difference was noted in the vasopressor response of normal and hypertensive persons but marked quantitative differences were present.
