Abstract
Parallel measurements of N2 fixation using acetylene reduction assays and loss of denitrified N using acetylene inhibition assays were made with detrital material from 2 tropical Kenyan lakes. The mean range of N2 fixation was 0.224-4.48 ng N g (dry weight)-1 h-1. Assuming a 2 cm interaction depth, these values are low to very low compared to other studies. They are .apprx. 4 orders of magnitude lower than the only other, but indirect, previous estimation for 1 of the lakes. Denitrification rates ranged between 20.1-1160 ng N g (dry weight)-1 h-1. These exceed the N2 fixation values by > 2 orders of magnitude, but are within the ranges given in other studies. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
