Abstract
Five rewarming techniques, appropriate for first-aid use in the nonhospital setting, were applied to each of 9 subjects whose body temperatures had been lowered to 35.degree. C in a stirred tank of 7.5.degree. C water. The rewarming techniques were: inhalation of heated, water-saturated O2; placement of heating pads over areas of high heat transfer; combination of the previous 2 methods; hot whirlpool bath; and shivering. Inhalation of heated, water-saturated O2 was significantly better than the shivering control in minimizing temperature afterdrop and is preferred over the other techniques as it avoids the physiological hazards of the peripheral vasodilation from external rewarming. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
